KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the 23 schools in six districts in Sabah were affected by the earthquake and experts will be used to identify whether the building involved is safe before remedial measures implemented.
The deputy prime minister said that the initial report of the State Education Department (JPN) Sabah showed it involves 16 Primary School, six students and a Chinese National Type Schools in Ranau, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Penampang, Nabawan and Keningau.
In a statement today, Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister, said the damage was detected in the structure of the school building, teachers' quarters, roads and land in the vicinity of the school.
"The ministry is seeking the services of experts from the Forensic Unit of the Public Works Department to determine whether the buildings were safe to use before the repair is made," he said.
Muhyiddin said the allocation would be distributed soon enough to avoid damage to the Sabah NRD can be repaired so as not to disturb the teaching and learning process at the school.
MoE, Muhyiddin said, was waiting for a full report from Sabah NRD estimated damage.
"The priority is to ensure security ministry students and teachers secure, and teaching and learning process is not interrupted when the school reopened," he said.
He said that if necessary, the ministry will place the affected students to nearby schools so that they can follow the instruction as usual.
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred in Ranau at 7.15am yesterday followed a tremor-shaking until last night.
Tremors were also felt in other areas such as Tambunan, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud.
Ranau police have so far confirmed two deaths from the earthquake, which also caused the Mount Kinabalu climbers and mountain guides stranded pilot or rescuers before being rescued.
