Apple Watch begins global launch

Official Apple outlets in the Japanese capital were quiet Friday, with none stocking the smartwatch that the California company is hoping will give it a leading position in the world of wearables.

The Apple Watch debuted in selected global markets Friday with sales limited to clients who had pre-ordered online, making the launch a relatively low-key affair compared to tech titan's usual fanfare.

Previous roll-outs of the firm's products such as the iPhone and iPad have generated queues outside stores more than a week in advance, with many customers wearing fancy dress while waiting for shop doors open with loud whoops and cheers.

But official Apple outlets in the Japanese capital were quiet Friday, with none stocking the smartwatch that the California company is hoping will give it a leading position in the world of wearables.

Instead, initial sales of the hi-tech wristwear were being restricted to specialised and luxury boutiques in the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.

Yet though that first wave of watches were intended to be reserved to pre-ordered models, at least one non-Apple outlet in Tokyo was selling them to walk-up customers, an AFP reporter witnessed.

Online chatter entices fans

Twitter users spread word that a store in Tokyo's Akihabara electronics quarter had gotten deliveries of the watch, leading several intrepid people checking the rumour out to walk away with Apple Watches of their choice -- and without waiting in line.

Similar online chatter in Paris that luxury boutique Collette might have a thousand of unclaimed watches to sell to walk-up customers produced a line of some 200 people outside its doors Friday morning.

"Do you know if they'll have any in stock?" a hopeful customer named Franck asked other members of the Paris queue.

Some of those Parisian enthusiasts perched atop stools or on lawn chairs said they began forming line outside the ritzy central Paris shop on Wednesday afternoon.

"I lined up at the Opera Apple Store for the iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, so this is a bit of a change of pace," mused one waiting buyer named Michael.

As the case in Asia, most people queueing in Paris were male. But irrespective of gender, all clients who got their hands on a watch declared themselves pleased.

"I'm happy. I want to wear it all the time," said Makoto Saito, a 23-year-old who appeared at a store in the chic Omotesando area, wearing a giant cardboard Apple Watch on her head.

Saito said she took the day off work to pick up the gadget.

Takuya Kajigaya, 32, said he was "thrilled" with his purchase.

"I want to make phone calls (with the watch) once I'm back home," he said, adding it would be a little embarrassing to talk to the device on his wrist.

While most buyers at the Softbank store in Tokyo's posh Ginza district pre-ordered the watch, 39-year-old programmer Yuichiro Masui said he had been waiting outside since Thursday night.

"I want to try the fitness application because I'm concerned about my weight," he said.

'Give it time'

In China, which is expected to be a key market for the item, new owners went online to give their views.

"It is awesome! The Apple ecosystem is so strong, a large batch of applications can be used on the Apple Watch," said one happy recipient on the country’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo.

Another posted: "Have received the Apple watch, have done some research but still couldn’t get used to it. Give it time, I really like it!"

Apple says the watch will connect wirelessly to a user's iPhone and will be the interface for messaging, calls and apps, especially ones geared toward health and fitness.

Users can also send a real-time display of their heartbeat to another Apple Watch.

Despite the excitement expressed by succesful and thwarted clients, their enthusiasm won't guarantee success of Apple's newest product.

Sony took its SmartWatch to market several years ago, and rivals Samsung and Huawei are preparing roll-outs of their own into the still largely under-developed sector.

"For Apple's watch to really kick start this category, it would need to tackle three issues: the design, the relevance/applicability and the price. If Apple get the first two right, the price issue would take care of itself , said Imran Choudhary, telecoms analyst at Kantar Worldpanel.

"No doubt loyal Apple fans will be buying this as soon as possible. But on the application and usability, will the ordinary iPhone owner see enough benefit? The answer lies in the apps that are being developed."

Prices for the Apple watch start at $349, with a limited-edition gold version costing $10,000.

Three policemen arrested in India over rape, extortion of model

Deputy commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni said the woman has alleged she was then driven to a police outpost and raped by the officers before they extorted up to RM28,118 from her.

MUMBAI: Police in Mumbai have arrested three officers who allegedly raped a model in a police station and then demanded several thousand dollars as blackmail to keep quiet, a deputy commissioner said Friday.

Three other men have also been arrested after the 29-year-old woman said the officers bundled her into a car as she was leaving an upmarket hotel in India's financial capital on April 3.

Deputy commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni said the woman has alleged she was then driven to a police outpost and raped by the officers before they extorted up to 500,000 rupees (RM28,118) from her.

"The investigations are being done meticulously considering the involvement of police and nature of the crime," Kulkarni told AFP.

"Right now, the allegations of extortion seem genuine, but the matter of sexual assault cannot be confirmed at this moment."

"They (the policemen) had no business to be there" outside the hotel, he also said.

Local media have reported that the woman's friend had gone to the police station to deliver the money after travelling to several ATMs in the night.

The woman reportedly sent a text message to Mumbai's police commissioner Rakesh Maria several days later alerting him to the incident, before meeting him to give more details.

India introduced tough laws against sex offenders in the wake of the fatal gang-rape of a Delhi student in the capital in December 2012 that sparked mass street protests.

But sexual violence against women has continued at frightening levels throughout the country.

Switzerland, Scandinavia top global 'happy' index

NEW YORK: Switzerland is the happiest country in the world, closely followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada, according to a global ranking of happiness unveiled in New York on Thursday.

The 2015 World Happiness Report is the third annual report seeking to quantify happiness as a means of influencing government policy. The United Nations published the first study in 2012.

Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia round out the top 10, making small or medium-sized countries in Western Europe seven of the top 10 happiest countries.

Academics identified the variables as real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption and generosity.

Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and one of the editors, said the top 13 countries were the same a second year running although their order had shifted.

They combined affluence with strong social support, and relatively honest and accountable governments, he told a news conference.

"Countries below that top group fall short, either in income or in social support or in both," Sachs explained.

The United States trails in 15th place, behind Israel and Mexico, with Britain at 21, pipped by Belgium and the United Arab Emirates. France ranks number 29, behind Germany in 26th place.

Afghanistan and war-torn Syria joined eight sub-Saharan countries in Africa -- Togo, Burundi, Benin, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Chad -- as the 10 least happy of 158 countries.

Despite the conflict raging in Iraq, that country was ranked 112, ahead of South Africa, India, Kenya and Bulgaria.

The 166-page report was edited by Sachs, John Helliwell of the University of British Columbia in Canada and Richard Layard from the London School of Economics.

"One of our very strong recommendations is that we should be using measurements of happiness... to help guide the world during this period of the new sustainable development goals," Sachs said.

Iceland, Ireland and Japan resilient

The report would be distributed widely at the United Nations and closely read by governments around the world, he said.

"We want this to have an impact, to put it straight forwardly, on the deliberations on sustainable development because we think this really matters," Sachs said.

Besides money, the report emphasized fairness, honesty, trust and good health as determinants, saying that economic crisis or natural disaster themselves did not necessarily crush happiness.

Iceland and Ireland were the best examples, the report found, of how to maintain happiness through resilient social support despite the severity of banking collapses during the financial crisis.

The Fukushima region of Japan also saw "increased trust and happiness" after the 2011 earthquake by allowing people to build their mutual dependence and cooperative capacities, it said.

On the other hand, recession-hit Greece was the "biggest happiness loser," down almost 1.5 points from 2005-2007 to 2012-2014, and where data points to the erosion of trust, it said.

They said more and more governments are listening and responding with policies that put well-being first.

Political consensus in Britain, Layard said, had fueled "a major transformation" in mental health services to give evidence-based treatment to 500,000 people with 50 percent recovery rates.

But he singled out German Chancellor Angela Merkel as "the most interesting world leader" in responding to happiness data.

He praised her for initiating a grass roots project "of very great importance" that seeks to find out "what people want to see changing in order that their well-being might change."

A positive outlook during childhood also lays the foundation for greater happiness during adulthood, the report found.

"We must invest early on in the lives of our children so that they grow to become independent, productive and happy adults, contributing both socially and economically," Layard said.
