All UTM applications 'We Alert' prevent dengue

Johor Bahru - A group of students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) took the initiative to create a smart phone app 'We Alert' to enable the public to know the spread of dengue in their respective areas.

Project Leader, Bong Yong Xiang said applications developed last February was still in prototype form and expected to be completed by the end of this year.

"We created this application because of concerns over the increase in the epidemic. This application will help local communities identify sensitive areas at the same time the outbreak and immediately take preventive measures," he told Bernama here today.

In addition to Yong, 21, the project team was also made up of Jason Lim Ji Chen, 21, Tan Ru Dei, 20, and Chin Linn Kern, 21, who assisted their lecturer Dr Yeong Chee Fai.

He said that through the application, the public can provide information about the occurrence of dengue in areas affected by uploading the application.

Yong said that the data contained in the application will display the number of dengue cases that occurred in an area under a specific color.

"There are three different color display that shows the scale of the area that is red for danger, yellow for medium and green for low," he said.

According to him, the information contained in the application is appropriate because they are derived from statistics released by the Ministry of Health of dengue.

Meanwhile, the Yeong said as mentor, his role is to assist students in terms of improving the application and coordinate their activities.

He said he wanted 'We Alert' benefit to the public and welcomes the cooperation of various government agencies, private sector and non-governmental organizations for the successful development of such applications.
